The .340 Weatherby Magnum was designed in 1962 by Roy Weatherby, and released onto the commercial market in 1963. The parent case is a .300 H&H Magnum expanded to fit a .338 bullet. The .340 Weatherby was introduced to compete with the .338 Winchester Magnum which had a hold on the market at the time. The ballistic performances based off three grain types for muzzle velocity are 3,221 ft/s (200 gr), 3,066 ft/s (225 gr), 2,963 ft/s (250 gr).

Factory loaded ammunition is loaded to maximum pressure, so hand loaders who wish to get extra muzzle velocity off reloading their own brass will see minimal results. Factory loads for commercial rounds are sold by A-Square, Federal, and Weatherby in 200, 210, 225, along with 250 grain pointed expanding bullets, Spire Point, and Nosler Partition. The .340 rounds are capable of taking down any sized game for hunting in North America.

Hand loading brass has a variety of bullets to choose from and costs are usually less expensive than factory manufactured rounds. Hand loading bullets ranging from 200 grain on up to 250 grain are typically the most used rounds for hand loading. A hand loaded 200 grain round with 89.3 grains of RL-19 powder can achieve 3,200 ft/s muzzle velocity.
