The .356 Winchester was designed in 1982 by Winchester Repeating Arms Company for the Model 94 lever action rifle. The .356 Winchester was offered for two rifle models, but never gained much traction on the commercial market and the last Model Marlin 336ER was discontinued in 1987. The ballistic performance based off two grain types for the .356 Winchester muzzle velocity are 2,460 ft/s (200 gr PP), and 2,310 ft/s (180 gr HC).

The .356 Winchester is based off the parent case .307 Winchester that was designed during the same year. The .356 Winchester had two rifle models to choose from compared to one for the .307, but still became obsolete on the commercial market due to lack of popularity with shooters. This caused it to go out of production a second time in the 1990's after being re-introduced to the market in 1988.

Hand loading brass for the .356 Winchester can be found ranging from 180 and 220 grain flatnose Speer bullets. It has to ability to take down medium sized game up to an Elk at 225 yards distance before noticeable wound penetration and trajectory drop-off occurs. Recommended hand loading powders for the .356 Winchester are H335, H4895, IMR4064, along with W748 load of a 220 grain bullet of 49.5 grains can successfully take down an Elk.
