The .300 Weatherby Magnum was designed by Roy Weatherby in 1944. The parent case is a .300 H&H Magnum by expanding it to maximum capacity. Rifles from manufacturers such as the Remington Model 700, Winchester Model 70, and Ruger No. 1 are able to use the .300 WM. The ballistic performances based off five grain types for velocity are 3,540 ft/s (150 gr), 3,390 ft/s (165 gr), 3,250 ft/s (180 gr), 3,060 ft/s (200 gr), and 2,845 ft/s (220 gr).

The .300 Weatherby Magnum has been a favorite for hunters in North America and across the globe for medium to large game hunting. It also is known for being popular with some benchrest clubs shooting competitions of 1000 yard targets. The 150 grain bullets can take down medium sized game with fast kills at distances no closer than 300 yards. The larger grain such as the 180 cartridges can take down game such as Moose with effective kills ranging from 300 up to 1000 yards out. The .300 Weatherby Mag is also known for giving shooters cuts above the eye brow with out the proper choice of scope and face placement during shooting.

Factory ammunition for the .300 Weatherby Mag starts at 130 grain Barnes TTSX up to 200 Weatherby Partition. Drop-off for trajectory usually starts off at 380 yards and becomes noticeable at 425+ yards out. Hand loading brass can be used for 150 grain 3,450 ft/s up to 220 grain at 2,900 ft/s. There are a wide variety of choices for hand loaders to make cartridges for light game all the way up to heavy game at reasonably close distances or for long range hunting.
