Originally called the Weatherby Varmintmaster, the .224 Weatherby Magnum was designed in 1963 by Roy Weatherby after almost a decade of research. Although it has no parent case the .224 was designed to be a scaled down version of the .300 Weatherby. This would help it obtain a high velocity round that over time became obsolete and is no longer produced.

The ballistic performance for the .224 WM is based off the 45, 50, 55, and 60 grain bullets and has a velocity of 3.457 ft/s (45 gr), 3,415 ft/s (50 gr), 3,242 ft/s (55 gr), and 2,958 ft/s (60 gr). The .224 bullet loses most of its velocity between 50 and 250 yards and is typically considered a small game or varmint hunting round.

Commercial manufacturers including Weatherby offer the .224 Hornady 55 grain point bullets. The rounds are typically used for hunting small game, but well-placed shots make it suitable for hunting medium sized game also. Hand loading for the .224 is available through private manufacturers, but in 1994 Weatherby discontinued production of the rifle for the .224 cartridge.
