The .300 Remington Ultra Magnum was designed in 1999 by Remington Arms Company. The case is based off a .404 Jeffery Nitro Express by narrowing down the neck to fit a .308 (7.8mm) bullet. The case is a rimless bottleneck with a large rifle magnum primer. The ballistic performances based off five grain types for velocity are 3,456 ft/s (150 gr), 3,326 ft/s (168 gr), 3,256 ft/s (180 gr), 3,119 ft/s (200 gr), and 2,970 ft/s (220 gr).
The .300 Remington is known by hunters as a double edged sword. The bullets can produce fast penetrating wounds on any medium sized game; while the barrel can only reach up to 600 shots before excessive wear starts to take place. With factory loads the .300 Ultra Mag can produce fast effective kills on targets upwards to 900 pounds at a range of 300 yards.
The factory loaded ammunition can produce kills on a variety of medium sized game depending on the grain. The lower 150 gr can take down a 200 pound target, while the 200 grain can be used for larger animals such as Moose. Hand loading brass can produce faster velocity range than factory loads. The 150 grain at 3,550 ft/s, and 200 grain at 3,150, depending on the type of powder used for loading.
