The .270 Winchester was designed somewhere in the 1920's and was released by Winchester. The round was moderately popular for hunting medium to large game as its a bit more potent than the 30-30 and the 30-06. The 30-30 and the 30-06 are other popular rounds that while great for deer, are a bit underpowered for larger game like elk and mule deer.

The writer Jack O'Conner a writer for the magazine Outdoor Life was a huge fan, and he was by far the leading voice for this weapon. So helpful was he in the promotion of this round that Winchester created a wonderful looking mantle gun called the Winchester Model 70 Jack O'Conner that only comes in one round..you guessed it... the 270 Win. See the review of the Winchester Model 70 Jack O'Conner and see the photos.

So whats so special about the 270 Win? Power would be the quick answer. It hangs with the 30-30 and 30-06 until about the 250 yard mark as far as drop goes it then goes on to out-fly the 30-30, but the 30-06 beats it out. In regards to power this cartridge beats both the .30-30 and the 30-06. So the end result is a round that flies almost as well as the 30-06, better than the 30-30, and has much more of a punch. That's a good round no matter how you look at it.

So why is the .270 Win not the most popular round? It has much to do with the fact that this round was produced a bit late, in the 20's like we said. The US Military picked up the 30-06 years before as a primary round in 1905, and it was used in both World Wars, the Korean War, and Vietnam. History tells us that cartridges used by the military are later used by it's civilians. So it is possible that the .270 Win with it's power and range could be considered the better bullet.
