The .270 Winchester Short Magnum (270 WSM) was designed in 2002 by Winchester. The 270 WSM is third in line behind .270 Winchester and .270 Weatherby Magnum for the trio of .270 commercial rounds. It is based off a .300 WSM parent case by narrowing the neck to fit a .277 inch (7mm) bullet. The ballistic performance based off four grain type velocities are 3,700 ft/s (90 gr), 3,295 ft/s (130 gr), 3,250 ft/s (140 gr), 3,136 ft/s (150 gr).

The 270 WSM can produce kills on medium sized game up to 300 yards with 130 grain rounds before penetrating wound performance is noticeable. On larger grain such as 150 can produce very fast kills on targets as big as Elk up to 280 yards out before a drop-off is noticed. The projectiles fall just below the category of hyper velocity rounds that can sometimes lower the performance of kills by breaking apart from excessive force on closer targets. This helps make it popular for high velocity kills with out having any major problems.

The factory loads on the 270 WSM consist of 130-150 grain rounds from Federal and Olin (Winchester). Hand loading brass is made by Interbond, Woodleigh, and Berger with rounds that can produce fast kills up to 325 yards distance on medium sized game before a noticeable drop-off occurs. The size and weight of the rifles has also been reduced to 24 inches, but still maintains similar wound penetration on targets compared to other caliber bullets in its class. This has helped make the 270 WSM popular in other countries outside the U.S.A..
