The .35 Whelen was designed in 1922 by Colonel Townsend Whelen and James Howe. The parent case is a .30-06 by expanding the neck to accept a .358 inch bullet. The ballistic performances based off four grain types of muzzle velocity are 2,963 ftps (180 gr), 2,798 (200 gr), 2,613 ft/s (225 gr), and 2,523 ft/s (250 gr).

The .35 Whelen was originally a wildcat cartridge that was designed in 1922 by Col. Townsend Whelen while he was commanding the U.S. Army ammunition depot Frankford Arsenal in Philadelphia, with the help of toolmaker James Howe taking the design and implementing it into his craft for the finished cartridge that was produced. The design was formally standardized by Remington Arms Company years later in 1987 for the model 700 classic.

Hand loading brass is available for bullets ranging from 150 grain on up to 250 grain. The ballistic performance on muzzle velocity for 180 grain Speer with 61 grains of H335 powder is 2,804 ft/s and 2,515 ft/s for 220 grain bullet with 59 grains of W748 powder. The 200 and 225 grain bullets are considered the best choice for all around use on medium sized game with good wound penetration resulting in fast kills.
