The Model 647 .17 HMR Varminter by Smith & Wesson is a bit of an oddball in the realm of standard gun configs but all in all it works. You see the Varminter is a pistol..that you hunt varmints like groundhogs and coyotes and it's chambered in .17 HMR.. normally a rifle round. Strange right? O yeah it also comes with a Bi-Pod and a red dot scope standard.
This gun is really a custom concept by Smith & Wesson that fits well with handgun hunters as this 6 round varmint slayer is more than enough to get the job done. If you want to go out in the field but don't like the standard rifle sling combo this gun might do you well.
Let's think about the setup for a little bit..it really does make sense. You have a round like the .17 HMR that has very little kick/recoil it would work well in a pistol. I mean if you can fire a 357 from a pistol surely a .17 HMR is manageable. Next there is the distance issue pistols are normally short range instruments used for self defense and target practicing within say a 20-30 yard range for most people. Well Smith & Wesson took care of that by giving this thing a 12" barrel, a scope, and for stabilization a bi-pod. Now what you have here is a kids rifle barrel setup like a pistol lol. (not really just comparing barrel lengths no offense guys) So basically what we are saying is that this guns total package or config hypothetically works great. How it does in the field?
