The Sig Sauer P226 model was designed in the early 1980's for a possible bid on a U.S. Military handgun contract in 1984. The P226 was underbid, but the U.S. Navy Seals picked up the model afterwards for use in their missions. It is a large frame handgun designed for recreational and self-defense purposes. The original model features the 9mm (15-round magazine), and later models now also feature .357 Sig (12-magazine), along with .40 S&W (12-round magazine). It has an integrated accessory rail for adding a tactical light or laser onto it.

The overall length of the P226 is 7.7-inches, with a height of 5.5-inches, and a barrel length of 4.4-inches. The frame material is made from aluminum alloy, with a black hard coat anodized finish. The slide material is made from stainless steel, with a black Nitron finish. The grips are one-piece black ergonomic that features front strap serrations. The frame has a 4-point safety system that features, a decocking lever, automatic firing pin safety block, safety intercept notch, along with a trigger bar disconnector. The sights can either feature adjustable contrast or the 3 white dot SigLite night sights. The trigger pull is 4.4-pounds (SAO) and 10-pounds (DAO).
