The .338 Remington Ultra Magnum was designed in 2000 and released to the commercial market in 2001 by Remington Arms Company. The case is based off the .300 Remington Ultra Magnum by expanding the neck to accept .338 bullets. The case type is a beltless bottleneck with a large rifle magnum primer.

The ballistic performances based off two 250 grain types are 2,860 ft/s (Core-Lokt) and 2,860 ft/s (PSP A- Frame). The cartridge requires a barrel length of at least 26 inches but 28 inches is the preferred barrel length. Hand loading brass does not give improvement in muzzle velocity due to the all ready high pressure (65,000 PSI) the factory load casings exert.

There are two types of factory loads offered by Remington for the .338 Ultra Magnum. The 250 grain Core-Lokt and Swift A-Frame. Hand loading brass is available for 225 grain and 250 grain bullets. The muzzle velocity for hand loading can achieve 3,000 ft/s for the 225 grain with a 91 grain load of RL-22 powder.
